Can I use bio-fuel in my engine?

Bio-fuels have different physical properties to their fossil counterparts. This can mean that modifications are required and even that the engine maker will not honour the warranty on an engine run on bio-fuels (it is wise to check with the dealer if you can use bio-fuel in your engine if still under warranty). Here are some pointers though:

Bio-gasoline is a blend of mineral gasoline with ethanol. This fuel can require the engine to be retuned if a high ethanol blend used (esp. if neat). However if this is done not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, you will get more power and therefore better mileage from your engine.

Bio-diesel is also often blended into mineral fuel to reduce the carbon emissions. Typically in the EU this is a blend of 5% bio-diesel and 95% mineral diesel (this fuel then complies with EN-590 and is usable under all engine warranties). Some use a neat bio-diesel in their engines, however this is not advised by the manufacturers for engines running high-pressure common-rail fuel injection systems as the characteristics of the bio-diesel can damage key components. Many older diesel powered vehicles can use bio-diesel safely, ChemEcol advise you to check with your vehicle dealer or maker for the best advise.

Interestingly several large suppliers of fuel in the UK have begun adding small amounts of these bio-fuels to their forecourt fuel. Some have seen the advantages as significant enough to warrant the inclusion of a bio-fuel portion in their standard product.

ChemEcol cannot and will not accept responsibility if unsuitable fuels are used and any damage is caused. Always refer to the manufacturer of your engine/vehicle.
